The
procedure used does not involve a scalpel or skin stitches. A small
opening is made in the scrotum using an electric diathermy needle.
A length of each of the two sperm-carrying tubes is cauterised and
the ends are sealed. The skin is closed using diathermy and healing
occurs within a few days leaving a tiny scar that can barely be seen
(except on very close inspection under a good light!). The procedure
takes approximately 20 minutes. |

This
technique offers certain benefits over the conventional approach:
|
|
|
It is quicker |
|
|
Bleeding and bruising is minimised |
|
|
Shaving of the scrotal area is not necessary thus avoiding the irritation
from re-growth of hairs, said by some to have been the most unpleasant
part of having a vasectomy. |

The
procedure is safe and effective. The operation is not effective immediately
- it takes up to a few months for the sperm to clear from the semen.
For this reason it is most important that semen samples are checked
(at 13 and 15 weeks after the procedure) and shown to be clear of
sperm before other methods of contraception can be abandoned. |
