Vasectomy is a widely used and highly effective method of permanent male contraception used by some 50 million couples worldwide.
It involves a minor operation in which the tubes that transport sperm are divided and sealed through a small opening made in the scrotum under local anaesthetic.

Vasectomy is a permanent procedure and should be viewed as irreversible. It should therefore only be undertaken for an individual or couple who are sure that they do not wish to have more children - although reversal is technically possible it has a low success rate and is expensive.
